Written reflection: Write about a time when a loved one was at the end of their life or at the most difficult part in their illness process. How did you experience this time, emotionally, physically, and mentally? What did you need most? What did your loved one need? What are you grateful for that you learned from or experienced during this challenging time?

Practice-in-action: This is adapted from the Buddhist metta (loving-kindness) meditation. Find a quiet place to sit where you will not be interrupted. Set a timer for five minutes, or just allow time to unfold. Bring to mind a loved one you have lost or who went through a difficult illness. Notice what feelings arise in you: grief, anger, regret, or something else. To communicate your deep wishes, speak the following phrases silently, and then repeat them several times. To your loved ones, say: “May you be at peace; may you be free from suffering.” Then, to yourself, say: “May I be at peace; may I be free from suffering.” Lastly, to humankind, say: “May we all be at peace; may we all be free from suffering.”
